Intro to Culture of Care for ​Special Education Educators & Professionals Professional Development Training
November 4-7, 2025

Are you a dedicated educator passionate about creating a truly supportive and thriving environment for students with special needs? We invite you to be a part of an innovative pilot program for our new curriculum: Intro to Culture of Care for Special Education Educators & Professionals!

This comprehensive training, developed from our evidence and research-based Intro to Culture of Care curriculum (refined over 10 years), provides Special Education professionals with the foundational knowledge and practical strategies to create a Culture of Care within their classrooms and schools through Restorative Justice Principles & Practices and Culturally Appropriate Relationships & Interactions. Through engaging modules and interactive role-plays, you will explore best practices in:

  • Foundations of Restorative Justice Principles & Practices: Understand the core philosophy and principles of Restorative Justice principles & practices, moving beyond punitive discipline towards repairing harm and building community.
  • Restorative Practices in Special Education: Learn practical strategies for integrating restorative practices into classroom management, behavior intervention plans, and IEPs; this includes but is not limited to Community Building Circles, Restorative Conversations, and Restorative Circles.
  • Culturally Appropriate Relationships: Develop an understanding of how to create a connected & caring community with diverse cultural perspectives and learn how to build authentic, respectful, and effective relationships with students, families, and colleagues from all backgrounds.
  • Addressing Challenging Behaviors: Explore how restorative approaches can effectively address a range of challenging behaviors in students with special needs, focusing on understanding root causes, developing the capacity for empathy, and supporting how students can take responsibility for their actions.
  • Building Inclusive School Communities: Discover how to create a school-wide culture that values empathy, respect, and shared responsibility, benefiting all students, especially those with special needs.

  • Hands-on Practice: Engage in Community Building Circles, Norm Setting Circles, Restorative Conversations, and Restorative Circles, and more!
  • Effective Behavior Response: Learn to address a range of misbehaviors, from minor to major, through restorative lenses.
  • Action Planning for Sustainability: Develop a personalized Action Plan – a vital roadmap for successful implementation and lasting change at your school, district, department, or organization.
  • Appreciative Inquiry Foundation: Blend existing strengths with new restorative practices using this powerful, strengths-based approach.
  • Collaborative Learning: Work in teams using the circle process to cultivate and deepen your understanding of each module's content.
  • Interactive and Practical: Participate in dynamic discussions fueled by Appreciative Inquiry questions and gain practical experience through small group practice sessions.

​Become a Certified Specialist and a Trainer!
This research-based program is designed as a training-the-trainers professional development. You will leave with the knowledge, skills, and resources not only to implement what you've learned but also to effectively teach these principles and practices to others.

​Upon successful completion of all 4 days, you will become a  Certified Specialist in Creating a Culture of Care in Schools using Restorative Justice Principles and Practices and Culturally Appropriate Relationships and Interactions in the field of Special Education.

Further Your Education:
Participants also have the option to earn 2 Master's credits from Colorado State University (CSU) upon completion of the training.
